Sandwiches were meant to be eaten on the go. But there are popular sandwiches that might as well be eaten away from the public eye and in the privacy of one’s own dinner table simply because they are messy sandwiches. The sauce dribbles from your chin, the filling spills onto the plate and onto the table, and one fold of napkin would not be enough to clean up the mess on your face and on the table.
The key ingredients in the messy sandwiches group are the fork tender pork (or seafood in some cases) and the sauce. these messy sandwiches include the Po’ Boy, the pulled pork and the sloppy joes — all of them with their particular delight and charm for the sandwich lover.
The Poor Boy (a.k.a. Po’ Boy) spills over with filling and dressing in a submarine-style sandwich. According to The Nibble, an online magazine dedicated to specialty foods, the Po’ Boy is a staple from Louisiana that makes use of fried seafood. That can be “oysters, crawfish, shrimp, soft-shell crab or catfish — although hot roast beef or ham po’ boys are also served,” says The Nibble.
Meanwhile, the pulled pork sandwich drips with barbecue sauce and really tender meat. The heart of this sandwich is the pulled pork, defined in The Food Timeline as “Slow cooked pork (on grill or in oven) with moisture (water, bbq sauce) results in a product that can easily separate (pulls) into strings (sinews). Pork is then cut, sauced and served (generally) served in sandwich form.”
Sloppy joes were so named because you would need to be reaching for a napkin with its ground beef, sweetened tomato sauce and onions oozing out of the bun as you bite. The sloppy joes are a kid favorite, best prepared using fresh ground beef. If you find the pulled pork or po’ boy sandwich too elaborate or complicated to prepare, consider making the sloppy joes instead — they are worth whatever mess you make.
